Let me tell you a story. One of my good friends lives with six hundred animals on the Greek Island of Kyklos. There is not enough water on the island, t 1 there is a lot all around it. My friend told me that when he was out looking for water last week , he found oil. He n 4 money for his travels, and for his zoo, and a little oil can buy enough water for a long time, but he knows that if he tells anybody else about it, it will be the e 5 of his zoo and his life’s work. Everyday Millan puts on his running shoes and takes a four-hour walk with 40 dogs---large and small, y 1 and old. Most of those dogs belong to him. The rest are at the heart of his work, they are troublesome dogs sent to Millan to learn good manners.Millan, star of the TV show Dog Whisperer and author of the best-selling book Cesar’s Way, has a special gift for working with these animals.

Growing up on a farm, Millan knew he wanted to work with dogs. His first job, at the age 15, was helping a veterinarian(兽医). He was so good at letting dogs quiet and handling all kinds of situations. People started to c 2 him “the dog boy”. Since then, he has built a rewarding job around his favorite animal.

“My grandfather taught me at an early age n 3 to work against nature,” he explains. In nature, dogs like to stay in a group and follow one leader. Millan’s specialty is teaching people to be leaders for their dogs.

Studying dogs on the farm where he grew up, Millan realized they need lots of exercise to stay quiet. He explains his way: “Exercise and rules f 4 , and then love!” he says that a lot of people get it backwards because they don’t realize what dogs r 5 need. Therefore, while he trains dogs, he teaches owners to understand that their pets need rules.

To find the right job, Millan e 6 kids to do what they enjoy. “A lot of people don’t realize I’ve worked with dogs for more than 20 years---long before my TV show or book. Success followed me because I was following my d 7 of being the best dog trainer in the world.”七

Two American scientists told the people in industrial nations that they would be much healthier if they ate more of the same kind of foods eaten by humans living more than 10,000 years ago.

The scientists say that the human body has changed very l 1 since human first appeared on earth, but the way we live has changed greatly. Our body has not been able to deal with these changes in life style and this has led to new kinds of d 2 . These new sicknesses were not known in ancient times. So they are called “diseases of civilization(文明)”. Many cancers and diseases of the blood system, including heart attacks and strokes(中风)are examples of such diseases.

Scientists noted that early stone-age people used very little alcohol(酒精)or tobacco (烟草), probably none. Ancient people also got a great deal of physical e 3 , but a change in food is one of the main differences b 4 life in ancient times and life today. Stone-age people hunted wild animals for their meat, which had

much less fat than farm animals. They also ate a lot of fresh vegetables and fruits. They did not use m 5 and other dairy products, and they made very little use of grains. But today, we eat a lot of dairy products and grain foods. We eat six times more salt than stone-age people. We eat more sugar. We eat twice as much fat but much l 6 vitamin C.

People today probably do not w 7 to live as people thousands of years ago did, but scientists say that we would be much healthier if we ate as those ancient people did, cutting the amount of fatty, salty and sweet foods.八

Hi Mary, Thank you for writing to me and I will try to give you some ideas about improving your written English. The bad news, of course, is that there is no e 1 way to do this. It takes work. Improving your English, like getting better at anything else, means lots of practice. I think you already know enough words and grammar in English to make sentences and to understand English, and the problem you have is as the problem all Chinese students have when they learn English. You go to English class a couple of times a week and the r 2 of the time you speak Chinese. If you come to Canada, your English would improve very q 3 because you would use it all day, every day. It’s just practice. To improve your writing in English, you should do t 4 things. First, you should try to read English as much as possible. It doesn’t matter what you read, so pick something that interests you. Reading English will show you how English words are used together, how English speakers express themselves and so on, so you can learn a lot from that. Then you should practice writing. Ask your teacher if you can get extra assignments and write things like short stories. Your teacher can show you where you make mistakes and how to c 5 them. You can also write more letters to English speakers on the Internet (I will be happy to exchange letters with you if that will help). Don’t worry if you make mistakes b 6 that is how you learn. You say you can not obey your plans. In English we say, “Plan the work, work the plan.” You need a plan and then you need to follow your plan to improve.I hope these ideas are u 7 . I wish you luck, and if you want to write to me I will be happy to try to help you. We can talk about China, about Canada or anything else you like. Best wishes,Brad Flankin九

Going to see a new movie is a good way to spend a night out on the town, and there are more and more to choose from. In a big city like London, New York or Beijing, it is p 1 to choose from more than 100 films every night of the week. Some of them cost more than 100 million dollars to make, and some of them were made for just a few hundred dollars. The movie industry is big business, b 2 things are not as good as they should be for movie makers. In addition to competition from other forms of entertainment—television, computer games, etc.—there is the problem of illegal download(下载)of films. The movie industry has started to consider the problem very s 3 .

In a suburb of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA, a 13-year-old boy named Ben Rangel recently downloaded four movies from the Internet. What he did was against the law. The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) took legal action, not against Ben, but against his 67-year-old grandfather, Fred Lawrence. Ben u 4 his grandfather’s computer to download the movies.

The MPAA wrote a letter to Mr. Lawrence, but didn’t answer. They then asked for a payment of $600,000 and Mr. Lawrence was very worried. Finally, the MPAA and Ben’s family agreed about the best thing to do.

Ben said he was s 5 in front of 100 students from the seventh and eighth grade at his school, Maple Dale School in Racine. Ben warned students not to download movies or computer games w 6 paying for them.

“My grandpa had much t 7 because of me,” said Ben. “I’m here to tell you that download is wrong, and we shouldn’t do it.
