It was 7:15 a. m. on June 1, 2016, and Gary Messina, now 58, was on his morning run along New York City’s East River. Suddenly he saw a man jump into the dark river below.

When Messina reached the river, the man was screaming for help, clearly unable to swim. If he had intended to kill himself that morning, he had now changed his mind. Other joggers also heard the man’s help. David Blauzvern and John Green jumped in. Messina joined them in the river.

Just as the jumper was losing strength, Blauzvern grabbed him. The pair were about 30 yards from the seawall when Messina and Green caught up to them. By now, a crowd had gathered on land. “A rescue boat is on its way,” someone yelled to them. Treading water (踩水)was getting tougher by the minute. The jumper was deadweight in his rescuers’ arms. After ten minutes, they managed to get to the river’s edge. Fighting the current and holding the man above the water quickly became exhausting, so they gave in to drifting while staying as close to the wall as they could.

Fifteen minutes after the men had jumped into the river, the two-man rescue boat appeared. But because it couldn’t risk getting too close to the seawall, the men had to swim out to it.

Blauzvern remembers being pulled down just as someone in the boat grabbed onto the man, allowing Blauzvern to let go. I was completely out of energy at this point, he says.

Somehow, he grasped a pole attached to the boat deck and hauled himself aboard. The men in the water pushed the jumper while the men in the boat pulled him up and, finally, to safety. Messina and Green then got themselves aboard, and within ten minutes, the group was back on land. The man they had saved was taken to the hospital for evaluation. Details on his condition have not been released.

As for the rescuers, each of them was at work by 10:30 a. m. I was a bit late, admits Blauzvern, smiling. But I had a good excuse.

24. Who caught hold of the jumper and got on board first?

A. The boatman. B. Gary Messina. C. David Blauzvern. D. John Green.

25. Which is the right order of the rescue? a. The two man rescue boat appeared. b. Messina and Green caught up to them. c. They managed to get to the river’s edge. d. Blauzvern and Green jumped into the river. e. Messina and Green got themselves aboard. A. deabe B. dbcae C. bcaed D. bdcae

26. How long did the rescue possibly take? A. A whole morning. B. Within 15 minutes. C. More than 4 hours. D. About half an hour.

27. What happened to the rescuers at last? A. They were sent to hospital. B. They were all pulled up to safety. C. They were back to work, normally. D. They were punished for being late.

In his 402nd anniversary year, Shakespeare is still rightly celebrated as a great wordsmith and playwright. But he was not the only great master of dramatic writing to die in 1616, and he is certainly not the only writer to have left a lasting influence on theatre.

While less known worldwide, Tang Xianzu is considered China’s greatest playwright and is highly spoken of in that country of ancient literary and dramatic traditions.

Tang was born in 1550 in Linchuan, Jiangxi province, and pursued a low key career as an official until, in 1598 and aged 49, he retired to focused on writing. Unlike Shakespeare’s large body of plays, poems and sonnets, , Tang wrote only four major plays: The Purple Hairpin 《紫钗记》, The Peony Pavilion 《牡丹亭》, A Dream under a Southern Bough 《南柯记》 , and Dream of Handan 《邯郸记》. The Peony Pavilion is considered Tangs masterpiece. The latter three are constructed around a dream narrative, a device through which Tang unlocked the emotional dimension of human desires and ambitions and explores human nature beyond the social and political restrictions of the time.

Tang lived towards the end of the Ming dynasty (1368—14) and the popularity of his works had a good reason. Similar to Shakespeare, his success rode the wave of a renaissance(文艺复兴)in theatre as an artistic practice. As in Shakespeare’s England, Tangs works became hugely popular in China too. During Tangs China, the way, in which play-texts were enjoyed and performed, changed. Kunqu opera, a form of musical drama, spread from southern China to become a symbol of Chinese culture. Combining northern tune and southern music, kunqu opera was known for its poetic language, music, dance movements and gestures. Tangs work benefitted greatly from the popularity of Kunqu opera, and his play-texts are considered kunqu classics.

While Tang and Shakespeare lived a world away from each other, they share in common the humanity of their drama, their iconic, heroic figures, their love for poetic language, a lasting popularity and the anniversary during which we still celebrate them. 28. What’s the best title of the text? A. Tang XianzuThe Shakespeare of China B. Kunqu Opera a Symbol of Chinese Culture C. Tang Xianzu and His Work —The Peony Pavilion D. Shakespeare and His Influence on Chinese Theatre 29. According to Paragraph 3, Tangs plays . A. are love stories based on real events B. reflect political environment at that time C. focus on discovering human emotions D. are mainly about dreams of females

30. The underlined phrase in paragraph 4 probably means . A. led to B. called up

C. set off D. benefited from

31. How is the text developed? A. By analyzing data. B. By telling stories. C. By making comparisons. D. By providing arguments.
